We have recently launched a portable poop waste bin: Poop Of. While it’s designed to make life easier and more comfortable for people who already pick up after their dogs, we also hope to inspire every dog owner to do the same, even on trails and out in nature.
Because leaving dog poop behind isn’t harmless. It actively disrupts natural ecosystems and can spread harmful bacteria and parasites.
How can dog poop be harmful to the environment?
First, it’s important to understand that dog waste is very different from wildlife waste. Dogs eat processed, nutrient-dense food, which means their faeces contain unnaturally high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. When left in nature, this can:
- Damage native plants
- Cause algae blooms in nearby waterways
- Disrupt the natural nutrient balance of soil
This also means that dog poop hangs around for far longer than wildlife faeces. While wild animal waste is completely natural and decomposes quickly, dog poop can take months or even years to break down depending on the particular environment and climate where it is left. During that entire time, it can continue to pollute the surrounding environment, especially when rain washes it into streams, rivers, and lakes.
On top of that, dogs can carry bacteria and parasites such as giardia, salmonella, parvovirus, and E. coli. Some of these are rare, but others, like giardia, are fairly common, and many owners don’t even realize their dog is a carrier. When dog waste is left behind, these pathogens pose a risk not only to wildlife, but to other dogs and humans as well.
Similarly, if your dog is on any medication, residues of the medicine can be present in its faeces. Most dogs are given antiparasitic treatments, and residue of these in poop can contaminate soil and water, and may also harm wildlife as well as insects that play a crucial role in the nutrient cycle.
Finally, even the smell of dog poop can adversely affect wildlife. Many prey species are highly sensitive to the scent of predators, and the presence of dog waste can alter their behavior and increase stress levels.
It’s easy to think that leaving one poop in a large forest won’t make a difference. But if everyone thought that way, our environment would quickly become contaminated.
Picking up after our dogs isn’t just about cleanliness, it’s about collectively protecting the places we love to explore together.
How does Poop Of help you do this?
Poop Of is a magnetic, portable waste bin designed to hold dog poop. It is a smart and hygienic way to carry your dog’s waste when there are no bins around.
You can take it with you on trails: it easily clips onto backpacks, belts, or any gear, keeping your hands free and odours contained.
Then, it attaches securely to the rear of your car for the drive home thanks to 4 extra strong magnets, keeping unpleasant smells outside, and your vehicle fresh on the inside.
